A Vietnam-Netherlands joint biogas programme has been nominated for an international prestigious prize on energy and environment.

According to the Dutch Embassy in Hanoi, the "Biological Gas Programme for Vietnam's Livestock Breeding" was one of the nominees for the Global Energy Prize, which will be awarded in Belgium in early 2007.

The programme, launched in 2003 under cooperation between the governments of Vietnam and the Netherlands and with technical assistance from the Netherlands Development Agency, aims to develop a market-oriented, sustainable biological gas industry and reduce the use of fossil fuel.

Images showing the use of biological gas in Vietnam will be shown in a live 90-minute television programme to be broadcast globally.
