Around 39,000 new people are infected with HIV/AIDS annually in Vietnam, bringing the total current number of people contracted with HIV/AIDS to 300,000, according to a recent survey conducted by the US Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

High risk groups are mainly drug addicts (accounting for 60-70 percent of the total number of drug abusers from detoxification centres), prostitutes and gays.

Ho Chi Minh City has the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases, accounting for half of all national cases it is followed by Hai Phong (1.1 percent) and Hanoi (0.7 percent)

Currently, Vietnam is still coping with difficulties and challenges in HIV/AIDS prevention due to the lack of a comprehensive approach, discriminatory treatment and low efficiency of detoxification and rehabilitation.
