Vietnam, Greece strengthen labour cooperation
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Ambassador to Greece Pham Thi Thu Huong paid a working visit to Ioannina from October 23-24 to boost bilateral cooperation, focusing on labour exchange with the largest city in northwestern Greece.
During the visit, Ambassador Pham Thi Thu Huong paid a courtesy call on and held a working session with Mayor Thomas Begas. She briefed the host on Vietnam’s economic development, the 50-year traditional friendship between the two countries, and high-level delegation exchanges in 2026.
The ambassador noted that good political relations provide a solid foundation for both sides to promote ties across all fields. Ioannina, home to major Greek food processing plants, currently employs nearly 300 Vietnamese workers. Ambassador Huong asked local authorities to continue supporting Vietnamese labourers living and working in the city.
She also introduced Mayor Begas to ASEAN and the activities of the ASEAN Committee in Athens (ACAT), proposing to organise joint events in Ioannina to promote local understanding of ASEAN.
Mayor Begas welcomed the visit, expressing readiness to support Vietnamese workers in the area. He agreed to strengthen ties with ASEAN member states as proposed by Vietnam, thus opening up cooperation in culture, tourism, and sports between Ioannina and ACAT member countries, including Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
During her trip, Ambassador Huong visited two leading Greek food processing companies, Nitsiakos and Pindos, to check on Vietnamese workers and discuss future recruitment. Company leaders praised the intelligence and hard work of Vietnamese labourers. They urged both governments to expand labour cooperation and simplify procedures to facilitate the recruitment of more Vietnamese workers for local factories.
Meeting with Vietnamese workers at the Nitsiakos factory, Ambassador Huong listened to their thoughts and aspirations, encouraging them to strictly comply with company regulations and local laws, maintain a positive work ethic, and help preserve the image and enhance the reputation of Vietnamese workers abroad. She affirmed that the Vietnamese Embassy will always accompany and support workers and Greek enterprises to ensure efficiency and protect the legitimate rights and interests of labourers.
