Vietnam enforces strict, transparent measures against IUU fishing

VOV.VN - Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang highlighted Vietnam’s consistent stance and ongoing efforts to prevent, combat, and strictly manage illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing at the ministry’s regular press briefing on November 6 in Hanoi.

Vietnam prioritizes sustainable development of its marine economy and fisheries sector, maintaining an appropriate fleet and fishing practices in line with the exploitation capacity of marine resources. The country fully adheres to regulations against IUU fishing.

In recent years, the country has strengthened its legal framework for fisheries to ensure effectiveness, while actively carrying out measures to prevent and address IUU fishing. Violations are dealt with firmly, transparently, and publicly, the spokesperson stated.

Recently, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed an action plan for the peak month combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and promoting sustainable fisheries development.

Vietnamese competent agencies and local authorities have continuously been and will continue to manage, raise awareness, educate, and implement concrete measures to ensure that fishermen comply with Vietnamese law and respect the maritime zones of other countries as established under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and other relevant international conventions and agreements to which Vietnam is a signatory or member.

“As a proactive and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam is ready to boost cooperation with regional countries and the international community to share experience in combating IUU fishing, and promote effective, sustainable fisheries management in accordance with international law,” the official emphasized.
