Vietnamese health authorities on August 15 confirmed 54 new cases of A/H1N1 influenza and encouraged the public to take preventive measures against the deadly disease.

The new cases included 34 in southern provinces, four in the north, eight in the central region and eight in the Central Highlands.

To date, Vietnam has reported 1,417 positive cases of the disease, and two deaths. More than half of the total, 1,052 patients, have recovered and been discharged from hospital. The remaining 365 are being quarantined for treatment. All are in stable condition.

The same day, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported that a total of 226,065 people have been confirmed to have contracted the A/H1N1 virus in 168 countries and territories, resulting in 2,004 deaths.

In Southeast Asia, the disease is developing in a complex manner with new infection cases and deaths surging.

The Philippines confirmed 3,207 cases and eight deaths; Singapore, 1,217 cases and 11 deaths; Brunei, 850 cases and one death; Malaysia 1,780 cases and 56 deaths; Laos, 156 cases and one death; Indonesia, 691 cases and three deaths; and Thailand, 10,043 cases and 100 deaths.
