Vietnam attends Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction meeting

VOV.VN - A delegation from Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment led by Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep attended the eighth session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025) in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 4.

Speaking at the session themed Every Day Counts, Act for Resilience Today, Hiep put forward Vietnam’s proposals to develop sustainable financial systems to respond to disasters, in line with the goals of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 - 2030.

He first stressed the need to promote investment in disaster-resilient infrastructure and to improve disaster risk data in order to identify appropriate financial solutions for vulnerable regions. He then called for enhanced international cooperation to mobilise resources for disaster prevention and control.

Sharing Vietnam’s experiences to help other countries strengthen their disaster response capabilities, he urged stronger cooperation among governments, the private sector, and international organisations to scale up disaster risk transfer financing initiatives.

He also proposed that the United Nations support the most vulnerable countries in the Asia-Pacific region in gaining better access to multilateral and global funding sources, thereby enhancing community resilience in the face of increasing disasters and climate change impacts.

The session, organised by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in collaboration with the Government of Switzerland, marks an important milestone between the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework and its conclusion in 2030.

It provides an opportunity to evaluate and discuss the progress in implementing the recommendations from the Political Declaration adopted during the UN General Assembly’s Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework in 2023, while also proposing practical solutions to accelerate implementation.
