Vietnam among nine nations benefiting from Kunming Biodiversity Fund
VOV.VN - Vietnam is among nine countries selected for new projects funded by China's Kunming Biodiversity Fund, with a total allocation of around US$4.5 million, announced at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) which concluded in Yerevan, Armenia, on October 31.
According to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China, the nine projects mark the initial batch of the fund's third deployment phase, covering Armenia, Bangladesh, Benin, Cameroon, Cuba, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Somalia, and Vietnam.
China launched the Kunming Biodiversity Fund in October 2021 during the COP15 Leaders' Summit with a pledge of 1.5 billion yuan. To date, China has allocated 400 million yuan (approximately US$60 million) to the fund, supporting 31 projects across 45 developing nations in the previous two phases.
The Chinese ministry noted that while the fund serves as a key platform for global biodiversity governance, progress on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework falls short of expectations, requiring additional resources and stronger international cooperation.
Adopted at COP15 in late 2022, the framework outlines 23 global targets for 2030, including the restoration of at least 30% of degraded terrestrial, inland water, coastal, and marine ecosystems.
While global political commitment to biodiversity conservation continues, protected areas expand, and deforestation rates slow down, the sector faces persistent challenges, particularly shortages in financing, technology, and institutional capacity.
China called on parties to translate the outcomes of the first global stocktake on framework implementation into concrete actions, explore innovative financing models, and strengthen monitoring, evaluation, and data sharing to advance biodiversity conservation goals.
