After six years of actively campaigning for the poor, VND1,700 billion has been mobilised so far to help poor people build and repair more than 418,000 houses and provide stable accommodations for nearly 2 million poor people. In addition, may poor people have been provided with means of production, capital and knowledge to escape poverty.

The two recent major typhoons caused great human and property losses for people in central provinces. Therefore, the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) has launched a “Month for the Poor” from October 17 to November 18 with a view to mobilising all resources to support poor people including those in central provinces.

In a concerted effort to respond to the Month for the Poor, Party organisations and administrations at all levels, the VFF, social organisations and localities will step up propaganda activities to raise public awareness of the campaign’s purpose and significance among agencies, units, enterprises and people from  all walks of life. In addition, State employees, armed forces and laborers are asked to donate their one-day salary to support the Fund for the Poor.

The Fatherland Front Committees at municipal and provincial levels are responsible for providing consultancy to carry out the “Day for the Poor” and “Month for the Poor” campaigns by allocating part of their budget for eliminating slum houses for poor households. At the same time, it is necessary to effectively manage and make use of all capital resources and relief aid so that they can be delivered to poor households in time. One of the important measures is to instruct poor people to do business and provide them with training and loans to develop production and increase income.

Especially, it is important to help storm and flood-hit families to stabilise their lives as early as possible.

During the “Month for the Poor” campaign, all people are encouraged to help the poor, and join efforts in implementing the 10th National Congress’ Resolution with a view to reducing the number of poor households to less than 15 percent by 2010.
