On the morning of July 26, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung visited Can Tho’s Martyrs Cemetery and burnt incense in memory of more than 19,000 fallen revolutionary combatants, who were buried in the city. The dead included many heroes of the armed forces coming from many various cities and provinces across the country.
On the same day, Politburo member Truong Tan Sang and State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan attended a ceremony to rebury 293 sets of remains of martyrs who were killed in Phu Quoc prison on Phu Quoc island during the resistance wars against the French colonialists and US imperialists.
The event was also attended by leaders of some ministries, HCM city, Ha Nam province and more than 1,000 former prisoners from Phu Quoc, and local people.
The remains were unearthed from February 20 through early July this year.
Meanwhile, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth League and the Vietnam Youth Union organized a special ceremony in the northcentral city of Vinh to honour those who have spent their time and energy finding the remains of the revolutionary soldiers killed in resistance wars nationwide.
The Communist Youth League praised 44 outstanding volunteers who represent thousands of volunteers in 19 teams searching for and recovering remains from across the country.
One of them is Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Vo Hong Ky, who has taken part in such a team for nearly eight years and has found and repatriated 1,355 sets of remains of the Vietnamese soldiers who laid down their lives in the battlefields of Cambodia and Laos.
Also on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of War Invalids and Fallen Combatants’ Day (July 27), the central provinces of Quang Binh and Thanh Hoa conducted field surveys on Road No 20 to build a tower to pay tribute to eight young volunteers who sacrificed their lives to ensure the constant flow of supplies, personnel and ordinance along the road during the resistance war against the US invaders.
