On June 23, the Californian-based company Probactive Biotech signed an agreement with the Nuclear Research Centre in Da Lat to conduct joint research on medicines to treat cancer.

A company representative expressed his pleasure at the project, saying that the Vietnamese pharmaceutical industry has developed rapidly and the Nuclear Research Centre has produced radioactive chemicals for medical treatment over the past 30 years.

He expressed his hope that the project will be successful as his company has already succeeded in producing an antibody to fight cancer.

The company said that they have combined Iodine 131 and Yttrium 90 with the cancer antibody to create a medical compound, capable of finding and destroying cancer cells with no effect to normal cells. Part of the research and development process will take place in the Da Lat Centre.

Clinical trials will then be conducted in Vietnam following the regulations of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health and the US Food and Drug Administration.

Radioactive medicines are used in medical treatment for some kinds of diseases. While the diagnosis has proved successful, the treatment regime remains in the early stages.
