The US will assist Vietnam to develop its civil nuclear industry under a deal signed in Hanoi on March 30 by US Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak and Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien.

The memorandum of understanding is expected to open up new prospects for bilateral cooperation in developing human resources and the infrastructure needed for nuclear energy, ensuring security and safety in this industry, accessing reliable nuclear sources, and managing radioactive waste and used fuels.

The US has accumulated a lot of experience related to the safe use of nuclear energy while Vietnam has adamantly pledged to develop civil nuclear energy in a responsible way by taking steps in cooperation with the US and other international partners.

The newly signed agreement also covers issues such as demands relating to nuclear reactors and fuel services and allows Vietnam to purchase nuclear fuel on the international market.

Deputy Minister Tien said at the signing ceremony that Vietnam has been actively applying nuclear technology and is implementing a nuclear power programme for socio-economic development. He reiterated Vietnam’s consistent policy of using nuclear power for the sake of peace and protesting against the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
