US-funded disaster mitigation centre opens in Phu Yen

VOV.VN - A sophisticated disaster prevention and mitigation centre equipped with the latest technological equipment funded by the US Pacific Command was inaugurated on July 15 in the central province of Phu Yen.

Flood in Phu Yen
Phu Yen and the surrounding region regularly suffer great losses from severe weather conditions such as storms, floods and whirlwinds, said Tran Huu The, vice chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, at the inauguration ceremony.

Mr The thanked the US Pacific Command for assisting in upgrading the province with state-of-the-art infrastructure and modernized equipment, saying it ultimately would go a long way in helping the province better cope with disasters and climate change.

Over the past few years, a number of disaster mitigation measures have successfully been carried out in Phu Yen, said Mr The, but due to a limited budget their overall effectiveness has been severely constrained.

This new facility will greatly assist the province in better conducting communication activities to raise public awareness, update flood scenarios, design solutions to cope with typhoons and better maintain facilities such as dams, reservoirs and docks.
