The death toll from Typhoon Xangsane, which hit central Vietnam on October 1, has risen to 30, including 26 in Da Nang city, according to the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control on October 3.

One person has remained missing while 269 others were reportedly injured by the most powerful storm in the past ten years.
Total material losses were estimated at more than VND6.437 trillion (US$402 million).

Typhoon Xangsane swept away 6,256 houses, damaged and submerged 260,000 others, and destroyed more than 5,200 ha of rice and other crops. About 280 ha of water surface for aquaculture were inundated, 786 docked ships sunk, and many roads and irrigation works destroyed.

Joint efforts are under way to help local people resume normal activities. Forces have been mobilised to repair damaged roads, bridges, schools and medical stations and restore power and water supply and communication systems.

Upholding the nation’s tradition of mutual assistance, cities and provinces across the country continue to pour aid into affected localities.

The Ministry of Defence has provided emergency aid worth VND500 million each to Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam provinces and Da Nang city; VND300 million each to Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Quang Ngai provinces; and VND100 million each to Binh Dinh and Ha Tinh provinces. It has also granted VND5 million to each victim’s family.

The south-western province of Tay Ninh also decided to provide aid relief worth VND100 million each for Da Nang city, Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue provinces, and VND50 million each for Quang Tri and Quang Ngai provinces.

Typhoon-hit localities have also received aid worth VND2 billion from Phu Yen, VND460 million from Binh Dinh, VND300 million from Khanh Hoa and VND80 million from Lai Chau.

According to the statistics, the National Committee for Flood and Storm Control, the National Committee for Search and Rescue and the Ministry of Defence have mobilised 4,025 soldiers, more than 23,000 militiamen, 19 aircraft, 272 ferry boats and 225 vehicles to transport more than 28,000 households to safer places and then return to their homes safely.

The Vincom Joint Stock Company officially set up the Kind Heart Foundation in Hanoi on October 3, donating VND100 million to victims of Typhoon Xangsane.
