The Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control held an urgent meeting in Hanoi on October 31 to cope with Typhoon Cimaron which has changed its course to the north and north-west.

According to the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Centre, at 04.00am on November 1, the typhoon was about 620km from the Hainan island (China) and moving with sustained winds of between 133-160km/h near its centre. It is expected to weaken a little and move north and north-west in the next 24 hours.

Due to the typhoon’s complications, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung asked Radio the Voice of Vietnam and Vietnam Television to coordinate closely with the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control to update news about the development of the typhoon, particularly its movement. The Ministry of Fisheries was asked to inform fishing vessels around the Hoang Sa (Spratly) Archipelago about the direction of the typhoon and seek shelters.

He assigned the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Border Guard Force to identify locations of vessels still out at sea and ask for assistance from neighbouring countries.

Coastal provinces from Quang Binh to Khanh Hoa were required to devise evacuation plans in case of emergency.

The National Committee for Search and Rescue on October 31 provided SOS signal balls to local border guards and the Ministry of Defence supplied 12,000 litres of gas and 20,000 litres of oil for the army in the event of search and rescue operations.

The same day, the Ministry of Health urged its departments to prepare emergency aid, including equipment and medicines for cities and provinces that will likely be hit by the storm.
