‘Patient 20’, has no longer relied on mechanical ventilation since May 4, and has several times tested negative for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes the COVID-19 disease. The 64-year-old patient is conscious, has no high temperatures and can communicate well.
PhD Pham Ngoc Thach, director of the Hospital of Tropical Diseases, said the female patient will be declared coronavirus free in a couple of days if nothing special happens.
She was detected to have contracted the deadly virus on March 6 and has since been hospitalized for treatment, including nearly 50 days at the intensive care unit (ICU).
The other severe patient, dubbed ‘patient 161’, was declared coronavirus free on May 5 after have responded well to treatment during her hospitalisation. She can eat and drink, and has been practicing functional rehabilitation exercises.
After being discharged from the Hospital of Tropical Diseases, she will be transferred to Bach Mai Hospital to recover from the stroke.
The woman, who is 88 years old and lives in Hung Yen province, is the oldest coronavirus patient in Vietnam.
The third critically ill patient is a British citizen who works as a pilot for Vietnam’s national flag carrier – Vietnam Airlines. The patient has a severely damaged lung and is still relying on ECMO therapy.
The Ministry of Health said in its update on May 5 afternoon that no new locally-transmitted cases have been reported in Vietnam for more than 19 days, keeping the country’s cumulative tally at 271 cases.
Of the total, 232 patients have fully recovered, and the remaining 39 active cases are receiving treatment at health facilities, with most of them in stable condition.
