Two rare sea turtles released off Phu Quy Island
VOV.VN - Two sea turtles entangled in discarded nets were rescued and released back into the sea by fishermen off Phu Quy Island in south-central Vietnam on April 26.
The turtles were found by a local fishing vessel while operating offshore near Phu Quy. After hauling in the nets, the fishermen cut them free and checked the turtles before releasing them back into the water. Both were in good health.
The turtles were identified as green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), a species listed for priority protection and conservation.
The rescue and release show fishermen’s responsibility in protecting marine wildlife and help raise awareness of conserving marine ecosystems in Phu Quy.
In recent cases, sea turtles have been found entangled in discarded nets and released back into the sea by fishermen, including incidents in mid-April in the waters off Mui Ne and Binh Thanh.
