Two Owston’s civets return to Vietnam
(VOV) -Two rare Owston’s civets born in the Newquay zoo, England, have been returned to Cuc Phuong national park as part of an international cooperation programme between the two countries.
In 2004, six mature civets were sent to the three famous UK parks including Newquay, Thrigby Hall and Shaldon Wildlife as part of a breeding programme which will help protect the species for future generations.

The programme, implemented by the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program (CPCP) and UK zoos, aims to build up a group of civets in captivity to conserve their rare gene sources and raise global awareness of protecting the species and other small carnivores in Vietnam.
“The successful transportation of the civets from the UK to Vietnam will considerably improve the gene diversity for breeding and raising this precious species at Cuc Phuong,” said Tran Quang Phuong, CPCP manager.
There is also a big potential for releasing the rare animal back into the wild in the future, he added.
