Travel demand in Hanoi soars before Lunar New Year

The volume of goods and passenger transported in Hanoi have strongly increased in January as the country’s biggest festival in the year - the Lunar New Year (Tet) – is approaching.

According to the municipal People’s Committee, the transport sector has served 83 million passengers, earning VND1.21 trillion (US$53.6 million), up 5.9% compared to the previous month and 15.7% year-on-year.

The volume of goods transported in the city is estimated to reach 51 million tonnes, raking in VND2.68 trillion (US$118.7 million), representing rises of 1.2 percent month-on-month and 7.7% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, revenue from supporting activities for transportation, including port, loading and unloading services, is estimated to hit VND2.31 trillion(US$102.6 million).

All bus and railway stations in Hanoi are planning to increase the number of vehicles, especially in peak time.

The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has announced to operate additional 900 flights, equivalent to 185,000 seats, from January 15 to February 13, up 13 percent as compared to the normal schedule and 46 percent as compared to the same period last year.

The low-cost airline Vietjet Air is selling 1.5 million discount tickets during the Lunar New Year for domestic and international flights.
