In Vietnam, traffic accidents kill around 30 people and injure 60 others every day. In 2006 alone, traffic accidents claimed nearly 13,000 lives, causing serious economic losses for the society in general and for the affected families in particular.

At a press briefing on Vietnam Innovation Day 2007 (VID2007) under the theme “Traffic Safety” in Hanoi on March 14, representatives of the National Traffic Safety Committee, the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation and the World bank in Vietnam said VID2007 will focus on five sub-themes: enforcement of traffic regulations, education and awareness raising, better emergency services, pollution reduction, and improvement in traffic environment and road design.

Speaking at the press briefing, President of the Asia Injury Foundation, Greig Craft, said traffic accidents in Vietnam are something of a brutal war as they claim the lives of around 13,000 people every year and cause great economic losses for the society in general and for the affected families in particular.

Short-listed ideas will be awarded and put into practice. At least 30 grants will be awarded, (each worth US$10,000).

Martin Rama, lead Economist of the World Bank in Vietnam, said VID2007 aims to put traffic safety ideas into practice nationwide.

Nguyen Trong Thai, Deputy Chief of the Secretariat of the National Traffic Safety Committee, said if traffic safety ideas are put into practice and developed nationwide, the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents will be reduced.

The World Bank’s Vietnam Innovation Day is a “mini marketplace” for innovative ideas that address local development challenges. After four years of being organised, Vietnam Innovation Day awarded more than 150 ideas and these ideas have been put into practice successfully.
