The recent strike of workers in foreign-invested enterprises, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, is a focal topic of the Executive Committee for the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) at its 6th conference in Hanoi from January 5-6.

Speaking at the conference, VGCL Chairwoman Cu Thi Hau said workers were on strike because the minimum wage in foreign-invested enterprises has not increased for the past six years.

The conference aimed to discuss the draft amendments to the regulations on strike in the Labour Code, which will be submitted to the National Assembly, in order to ensure that trade union organisations can legally and actively participate in resolving labour disputes and protecting workers' rights and interests.

The VGCL Executive Committee proposed to the Government for a 40 percent increase of the present minimum wage in foreign-invested enterprises, Chairwoman Hau said.

She asked trade union organisations at all levels to timely reflect workers' thoughts and desires to help the Party and State resolve outstanding problems relating to workers, and actively take part in resolving labour disputes and strikes.
