Three Koreans arrested in Da Nang for Cambodia-based scam
VOV.VN - The Da Nang City Police have arrested and handed over three nationals of the Republic of Korea wanted by Interpol for allegedly running an online romance scam network in Cambodia.
The suspects, Choi Minsu (26), Choi Jinwoo (25) and Seo Jaeseok (28), were transferred to RoK authorities for extradition following cooperation between Da Nang police and the Foreign Relations Department under Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security.
The trio are subject to of Interpol Red Notices issued at the RoK’s request on charges of fraud, criminal organisation and human trafficking, according to the police.
Investigators said the group operated an online romance scam from a criminal compound in Bavet, a border area in Cambodia, using deepfake technology to pose as women in order to target male victims. Once trust was established, they allegedly lured victims with offers of “paid travel tasks,” promising reimbursement of travel and accommodation costs.
Victims were first enticed to travel to Vietnam or Thailand and then persuaded to cross into Cambodia, where they were confined, stripped of their passports and forced to memorise scripts to carry out online fraud, the police said.
The network allegedly defrauded victims of around US$1 million between August and December 2024.
Authorities learned in October 2025 that the suspects had fled Cambodia and were hiding in Da Nang. Immigration officers later located them at a hotel in An Hai Ward and, with the support of local police and mobile units, detained them. The suspects confessed to being fugitives wanted by Interpol, according to the police.
