Three dead in suspected gas asphyxiation aboard cargo ship in Vietnam
VOV.VN - Three crew members have died and two others were hospitalised in a suspected gas asphyxiation incident aboard a cargo vessel anchored off the coast of Ca Na, central Khanh Hoa province, authorities said.
The vessel, Truong Nguyen 18, registered in Hai Phong, had been waiting to berth at Trung Nam Ca Na Port to load cargo.
The incident occurred late on March 16 when a crew member, 45-year-old engineer, entered a ballast tank more than 2m deep to pump out water. When he failed to return, another crew member, a 25-year-old mechanic, went down to check on him but also did not come back.
Crew members on deck raised the alarm after receiving no response. Rescue teams later determined that five people had been trapped inside the compartment.
Four victims were brought up to the deck and rushed to Ninh Thuan General Hospital, while another victim, a cook, remained trapped inside.
Rescuers pumped water out of the compartment and used specialised equipment to access the victims. The final body was recovered on March 17.
Authorities confirmed that three victims – the engineer, the mechanic and the cook – died in the incident. All were from Nghe An province.
The two survivors, including the mechanic and the ship’s 48-year-old captain, are currently in stable condition and conscious, according to hospital officials.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
