Threatened langur species found in Dong Nai province
Tens of black-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nigripes), an endangered species, have been spotted in Chua Chan mountain in Suoi Cat commune of Xuan Loc district, the southern province of Dong Nai.
Ton Ha Quoc Dung, deputy head of the forest protection division of Xuan Loc district and Long Khanh township, said there are two herds with nearly 20 langurs living at about 300 metres up Chua Chan mountain. Another herd of langurs was spotted at about 600 metres up the mountain.
Notably, there are pregnant and baby langurs in all the three herds, he said, adding that this is the first time his forest protection division has discovered such a large number of langurs in Chua Chan mountain.
Dung said his division is carrying out measures to protect the black-shanked douc langurs. Relevant agencies have also recommended local residents to have friendly attitude towards the animals and not to hunt them.
Black-shanked douc langurs are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). They are found to be indigenous to north eastern Cambodia and southern Vietnam.
The Prime Minister has recently issued Decision 628 requesting localities and sectors to urgently deploy plans to preserve primate species in the country.
