The fog of war: Hanoi battles mosquitoes to combat dengue

VOV.VN - City of Hanoi workers were out in full force in the wee morning hours of Friday, August 11, spraying a thin mist of insecticide in wards throughout the capital to kill mosquitoes and larvae as part of their effort to eradicate the dengue virus.

A city worker prepares to spray for mosquitoes in wards of the capital city of Hanoi from 1am-5am Friday, August 11.

According to a statement provided by the Ministry of Health, the drug of choice is Hantox 200 (pictured), which is not toxic to humans.

The fogging activity takes place at night because this is the time when most people are asleep and it limits the disturbance to their normal routines.

Above: A city worker explains Hantox 200 is formulated to kill mosquitoes while being safe for use in populated areas, including parks and playgrounds.

Over the next several days of warm weather, the city roads will get at least three passes from the fogging trucks, which require calm winds to operate, says the worker.

The fogging campaign is one of several tactics the city is using to kill mosquitoes that might bear the dengue virus.

The fog kills only airborne mosquitoes, so the city is targeting the insects in their breeding areas, especially standing water, the worker says.
