Tet for the Poor programme to be launched on Feb. 8

VOV.VN - A cake making programme for the poor in the lead up to the Lunar New Year 2026 (Tet) will be launched in Hanoi in early February to promote solidarity and compassion within the community.

"Bánh Chưng xanh - Tết vì người nghèo" (Green square glutinous rice cake- Tet for the poor) is set to be held at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in Doai Phuong commune, Hanoi, on February 8.

The annual event features traditional activities such as making Chưng cakes, a symbolic dish of Vietnam’s Tet holiday, alongside cultural exchanges and gift-giving for disadvantaged groups.

The programme is anticipated to offer approximately 610 gift packages, worth VND2 million each, to policy beneficiaries, poor households, and ethnic minority people. Key localities receiving gifts include Quang Tri and Cao Bang provinces with 150 gifts each locality. Gifts will also be handed over to social welfare centres, facilities caring for Agent Orange/Dioxin victims in Hanoi.

According to the organisers, the event seeks to introduce domestic and international visitors to the traditional Tet customs of Vietnam’s ethnic communities, while raising awareness, especially among young people, of the responsibility to preserve and promote traditional cultural values.

The programme, to be held by the Vietnam Authority of Ethnic Cultures (VAEC), is expected to draw around 200 participants, including representatives from 16 ethnic groups active at the village, and VAEC’s staff, as well as representatives from coordinating agencies.

The organisers said the 2026 programme aims to contribute to a positive and festive atmosphere welcoming the Lunar New Year, while underscoring the role of culture in strengthening social cohesion, national unity and the promotion of Vietnam’s humanitarian values.
