The tests, which were conducted on more than 30 samples of polystyrene food containers, indicated that the appearance of metal dregs in the boxes was within the safe level. Tests for dangerous bacteria were also negative.
“Disposable food containers should be used only once and at temperatures that are less than 70 Degree Celsius,” said Khuan.
Last month, the FAVN also announced similar results after testing 40 samples of polystyrene food containers in Hanoi.
The tests were conducted after the Hong Kong-based International Food Packaging Association revealed that some Chinese disposable dishware were unsafe because they contained excessive amounts of chemicals that could cause cancer. The FAVN said that food containers in Hanoi were made by China, Thailand and local food packaging companies, many of which had no origins.
The Hanoi Food Hygiene and Safety Monitoring Board on April 5 asked all districts and inner city wards to conduct food packaging inspections and strictly punish any violators.
