Temperatures above 40°C persist across northern and central Vietnam

VOV.VN - Severe heat is expected to continue across northern and central Vietnam over the coming days, with temperatures in some areas forecast to remain above 40 degrees Celsius despite scattered rain in several localities.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, intense and exceptionally intense heat continued across the North, the area from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang, and eastern parts of the region from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak on May 27.

Temperatures in many areas ranged from 38-40 degrees Celsius, with some locations exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, including Hanoi, Nghe An and Ha Tinh.

Several monitoring stations recorded extremely high temperatures, including 41.2 degrees Celsius in Con Cuong district of Nghe An province and 40.5 degrees Celsius at Lang station in Hanoi. Minimum humidity levels stayed at around 45-50%, resulting in prolonged hot and dry conditions.

The heatwave is forecast to continue across northern Vietnam, excluding Lai Chau and Dien Bien provinces, on May 28, with temperatures ranging from 35-37 degrees Celsius and surpassing 38 degrees Celsius in some areas. Hot weather is expected from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with humidity levels of 50-55%.

The area from Thanh Hoa to Hue is expected to remain the centre of severe and exceptionally severe heat, with temperatures ranging from 37-39 degrees Celsius and exceeding 39 degrees Celsius in some places. Hot conditions are likely to last from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., while humidity may fall to 45-50%.

In the south-central coastal region, temperatures will range from 36-38 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 38 degrees Celsius.

From May 29, hot weather is expected to persist in the area from Quang Tri to Da Nang and eastern parts of the region from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, with temperatures ranging from 35-36 degrees Celsius.

The weather agency forecast that the widespread heatwave in these areas could ease from May 30.

Meteorologists warned that prolonged extreme heat combined with low humidity has increased the risk of fires in residential areas and forests. People are also at risk of dehydration, exhaustion and heat stroke if exposed to high temperatures outdoors for extended periods.

Experts noted that actual outdoor temperatures may feel 2-4 degrees Celsius higher than forecast levels, particularly in densely populated urban areas and locations with asphalt and concrete surfaces that absorb heat.

The heatwave has been classified as a level-1 natural disaster risk.
