The Swiss government has pledged to donate US$248,800 to help train Vietnamese officials in combating zoonotic and animal diseases and ensuring food safety.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed in Hanoi on June 8, the Safe Food Solutions of Switzerland, in collaboration with the FAO representative office in Hanoi and Vietnam’s Veterinary Department, will organise three training courses on this theme, focusing on risk analyses and assessment.

The aid is intended to help improve Vietnam’s capacity in implementing the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement which is one of the requirements for World Trade Organisation (WTO) members.

The SPS Agreement requires WTO member countries to take measures, consistent with international standards, to protect human from risks arising from additives, contaminants and disease-causing organisms in food, and prevent the spread of pests or diseases among animals and plants.
