Foreign organisations have continuously poured relief aid into Vietnam’s central region which was devastated by powerful storm Ketsana a week ago.

The US Embassy in Hanoi announced on October 7 that the US government has approved an additional US$500,000 aid package to help Vietnam’s central provinces overcome the aftermath of storm Ketsana which took more than 160 lives and caused huge property damage.

The additional relief aid, which will be channelled through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), is in response to an appeal by International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Earlier, the US government provided aid worth US$100,000 to the victims.

The same day, the Republic of Korean Embassy in Vietnam said its government will provide necessaries including tents, water-proof mattresses, blankets and mosquito nets to storm victims in the central region. The aid package worth US$100,000 will be channelled through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOIKA). The goods will be transported by air and delivered to the victims on October 9.

Plan International has announced emergency aid worth nearly VND9 billion for children and families of storm victims in Kon Tum, Quang Ngai and Quang Tri provinces. It will focus on providing the victims with food and other necessities, putting up tents and restoring production in flood-hit areas. The organisation pledged to increase aid for the victims in the coming days.

Germany’s Red Cross Society has supplied water treatment equipment to help nearly 3,000 households in flooded Loc An commune in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue use safe water. The water-filtering equipment will be transported to other isolated areas for use after the floodwaters recede completely.
