Storm Prapiroon gains strength as it heads towards Gulf of Tonkin
VOV.VN - Storm Prapiroon is gaining strength and is forecast to enter the Gulf of Tonkin on July 22 after passing by Hainan Island of China, causing heavy rainfall in the northern region, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Forecasters said at 4 a.m. on July 22, the storm was located in the area around China’s Hainan Island with the strongest winds near its eye reaching between 75m and 88km per hour.
Over the course of the next 24 hours, the storm will track northwest at speeds of about 15km per hour before then hitting the Gulf of Tonkin on the afternoon of July 22.
By 4 a.m. on July 23, the centre of the storm will be located in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, thereby affecting the northern part of the East Sea and the northern region of the Gulf of Tonkin.
At around 4:00 a.m. on July 25, the storm is due to move west-northwest at speeds of about 5 km per hour and weaken into a low-pressure area on the southern mainland of China’s Guangxi province.
Due to the impact of the weather pattern, there will be strong winds impacting the North East Sea and the northern waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, including Bach Long Vi and Co To islands.
The coastal areas of Quang Ninh province are anticipated to experience waves of between 1.5 metres and 2.5 metres high. Furthermore, from July 22 to July 24 there will be heavy rain and thunderstorms hitting the northern region and Thanh Hoa province.
Meteorologists warned of the risk of flash floods, landslides occurring in mountainous areas, and flooding in both low-lying and urban areas.
Earlier on July 21, Prime Minister sent a telegram requesting ministers and chairmen of People's Committees of relevant provinces and cities move to deploy drastic and proactive measures in response to the storm in a bid to minimise the damage caused by floods and landslides and to ensure the safety of both people and property.
