Standing water slows traffic in Hanoi

(VOV) -Heavy rainfall from late in the evening September 17 to the morning of September 18 caused flooding in Hanoi and the surrounding metropolitan area making travelling a little trickier than usual.

Even when the rain stopped at 7am, vehicles could only travel at a snail’s pace. Traffic was seriously congested at the intersection of Nguyen Xien, Nguyen Trai and Khuat Duy Tien streets.

Traffic was backed up for a kilometre on Nguyen Trai Street with thousands of vehicles stalled by nearly a foot of rain.
At 8:30 am, traffic was still stuck.
The National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre measured the rainfall at 60 mm in the downtown area.
Traffic problems were compounded by drivers deliberately ignoring traffic signals and police instructions.
The heavy rain and strong winds uprooted many trees and caused numerous others around the capital city to snap and topple over.
