Bird flu has been reported in eight provinces and cities of the Mekong River Delta with an increasing number of new outbreaks in each locality. If drastic measures are strictly implemented, the spread of bird flu will be contained soon.

After a flock of unvaccinated duck died en masse in Kien Giang in early January, the Provincial People’s Committee asked local veterinarians to vaccinate nearly 400,000 ducks and take a series of bird flu control measures such as setting up a steering board for bird flu control in every hamlet, banning the transport of poultry stocks out of the infected area and culling all weak poultry. As a result, six bird flu outbreaks in five communes with more than 3 million birds in Kien Giang have been contained.

Meanwhile, Ca Mau- the first province which detected bird flu in the Mekong River Delta reported bird flu outbreaks in 26 communes, wards and townships as most of the affected birds were unvaccinated. Therefore, the provincial veterinary department has been trying to conclude a vaccination campaign for new poultry stocks and disinfect all affected areas in the next ten days.

Bird flu outbreaks have been detected in many places in Bac Lieu province which has a total stock of 1.2 million birds. Despite drastic measures to prevent the spread of the epidemic, new bird flu infections have been reported in 26 hamlets in 16 communes of the province.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Pham Hoang Be attributed the spread of the disease to the slow implementation of preventive measures, including vaccination for poultry flocks in the localities. In fact, the poor control of free-range birds also led to new outbreaks of the disease.
