About 130 business people and researchers from various companies and institutes met in HCM City on September 14 to promote renewable energy and the application of bio-energy in Vietnam through a seminar discussion jointly held by the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and the Asia-Pacific Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Energy (CESE).

The event also attracted investors, farmers, engine manufacturers and transporters from the UK, Ho Chi Minh City and its neighboring provinces and other cities in Vietnam.

"We are expecting great opportunities to develop bio-energy in Vietnam because it is
an attractive market that has a large biomass energy reserve and an increasing demand for energy," said Dr. Barry Holmes, International Trade Development Manager of Bronzeoak Group.

The Organics & Compact Power Company expressed interest in projects to produce gas and energy from dumping grounds and waste. This is an area in which the authorities in Ho Chi Minh City want to attract long-term investment.

The company has recently carried out small-scaled projects utilising rice husk, sugarcane bagasse or wood waste to generate electricity and produce bio-fuels in Southeast Asian countries and hopes to find new partners in Vietnam.

Khoo Hock Aun, an expert of DI Oils SEA, said that his company wants to work with farmers to produce sesame oil in Vietnam, while the Full Advantage company also said it hoped to find partners in Vietnam to develop renewable energy projects.
