World Trade Organisation (WTO) entry and its impacts on health care is the theme of a two-day seminar which opened in Hanoi on November 27.

The seminar, held by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), is part of a cooperation programme between the WHO and Vietnam aimed at sharing information among scholars and experts from research institutes, social organisations, businesses, and international and non-governmental organisations.

During the seminar, experts from the WHO, the WTO, the Ministry of Trade, and the Vietnam Intellectual Property Department plan to introduce the content of the WTO's health care related agreements, particularly the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and their impacts on access to medicines and health care services.

Vietnam
's commitments to the WTO regarding health care and the demand for improving its capacity are also scheduled for discussion at the seminar.

As part of its activities to fulfill WTO commitments, the Ministry of Health has issued a rule on ensuring security for information in applications for medicine registration in accordance with article 128 of the Law on Intellectual Property.
