The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) and the World Bank has signed an agreement on funding Vietnam’s avian and human influenza control and preparedness project in Hanoi on April 12.

The project aims to reduce the threat of avian influenza to poultry and humans to control the disease at source and respond to human cases of infection. 


The project’s total funding of US$38 million will include US$20 million from WB in loans, US$5 million from the Japan Policy and Human Resources Development Fund, US$10 million from the Avian and Human Influenza Facility of the European Community and US$3 million from Vietnamese counterpart fund.


Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Governor of SBV, Le Duc Thuy, said that with the new grant, the WB’s financial support has amounted up to more than US$6.5 billion for 65 projects and programmes in Vietnam. He said “We deeply acknowledge the WB’s financial support for Vietnam and highly appreciate the effective cooperation of the WB’s staff as well as the kind assistance from the Japan Policy and Human Resources Development Fund (PHRD) and the Avian and Human Influenza Facility of European Community.”


The project will be implemented in 11 provinces from 2007 to 2009 including Ha Tay, Thai Binh, Lang Son, Binh Dinh, Thua Thien Hue, Tien Giang, Long An, Dong Thap, Thanh Hoa, Tay Ninh and Ha Tinh.
