In the first half of this year there were more than 6,000 traffic accidents resulting in 5,800 deaths and nearly 4,000 injuries.
The information was released by Ho Nghia Dung, Minister of Transportation and Chairman of the Traffic Safety Committee, at a online conference on July 17.
The main cause for these accidents was a failure to observe traffic laws.
The committee has conducted many contests related to traffic safety awareness and has stepped up police patrols on every main road, dealt with more than 2.5 million law-breakers, revoked the driving licenses of about 77,000 drivers and issued fines totaling VND589 billion.
The provinces with the highest number of traffic accidents include Quang Ninh, Lai Chau, Vinh Phuc, Bac Lieu and Ninh Thuan.
