A respiration centre will be built in central Thua Thien-Hue province in commemoration of late Italian doctor Carlo Urbani, who sacrificed his life for the prevention and control of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Vietnam in 2003.

The Carlo Urbani centre, which will house a well-equipped emergency room, will be built at an estimated cost of 1.9 million euros. Seventy percent of the investment capital will be financed by the Italian government.

The centre, to be located at the hospital of the Hue School of Medicine, will be active in testing, diagnosing and treating respiratory diseases like SARS and H5N1 (type A) Avian Influenza in line with national and international standards.

The centre is responsible for epidemiologic activities in Central Highlands and central coastal areas.
