Requiem commemorates traffic accident victims

VOV.VN - The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) and the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) are set to jointly hold a requiem for peace of the souls of traffic accident victims on December 29 at Long Hung Pagoda in Dong Anh district of Hanoi.

At the ceremony, hundreds of Buddhist monks, nuns, and the relatives of victims will observe a minute of silence in memory of the victims, pray for the peace, and raise public understanding and observance of traffic laws in order to mitigate the the serious consequences of traffic accidents.

More than 8,335 traffic accidents occurred in the first nine months of this year, killing a total of 4,765 people and injuring 5,802 others. Road crashes were the leading cause of death, with an average of 20 people killed each day on the country’s roads, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

The requiem is part of activities in response to the UN General Assembly’s adopted resolution "Improving global road safety" in August 2020, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.
