The northern and central regions are sweltering in the most severe heat wave ever experienced in recent decades.
The National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Centre said that over the past five days, temperatures climbed to about 40 degree Celsius in the daytime while they hovered around 29-32 degrees Celsius at night.
On June 17, the temperature was 39.7 degrees Celsius in Hanoi but it went up to 40.3-40.4 degrees Celsius in central provinces.
The heat wave is expected to come down with the arrival of a cold air mass on June 20, that will bring showers to the northern and north central regions.
Some parts of the central region will still have temperatures in the forties for another two or three days.
