Rare Sunda pangolin handed over after wandering into local home
VOV.VN - A rare Sunda pangolin has been voluntarily handed over to local police in Dak Lieng commune, Dak Lak province, after it strayed into a resident’s home.
According to local police, the pangolin was handed over on January 26 by Y Diem Hlong, a resident of Knac village, who discovered the animal near the fence of his house on January 22. Recognising it as a protected species, he brought it to the commune police station.
The pangolin, weighing approximately 2.2 kilograms, was in stable health. Local authorities coordinated with the Lak Forest Protection Unit and other relevant agencies to complete the handover procedures before releasing the animal back into its natural habitat in accordance with regulations.
The Sunda pangolin, also known as the Malayan or Javan pangolin, is classified as critically endangered on both the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and Vietnam’s Red Book. It is also listed under Group IB – the category of rare and endangered forest animals given priority protection under Government Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP.
The voluntary handover by local residents highlights the rising sense of responsibility within local communities in Dak Lak towards safeguarding wildlife and preserving biodiversity.
