VOV.VN - Two rare monkey species - the stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides) and the northern pig-tailed macaque (Macaca leonina) - have been released into their natural forest habitat in the central province of Quang Tri.

According to Ho Van Sinh, Vice Chairman of the Huong Hiep Commune People’s Committee, the monkeys were discovered on October 22 by a local resident in Khe Ha village, who had caught the wild animals in his garden and immediately reported to local authorities.

Meanwhile, the northern pig-tailed macaque is of a vulnerable species in the subfamily Cercopithecidae. It is found in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Both species are classified under Group IIB of the Vietnam Red Book, which includes rare and precious wildlife that are strictly protected from captivity, hunting, trade, or killing.
