Rare herd of gaur discovered in Vietnam's Yok Don National Park
VOV.VN - A rare herd of gaur, one of the largest wild bovine species in Asia, has been discovered in Yok Don National Park, Central Vietnam, through camera trap monitoring, park authorities announced on May 14.
According to the park management board, the herd was recorded in April within the protected forest area of Yok Don National Park in the Central Highland region.
Initial camera trap footage captured at least four gaur individuals. However, park rangers said footprints and field traces suggest the actual herd size could be larger.
Gaur are classified as a rare and endangered wildlife species in Vietnam, falling under the country’s strictest conservation protection category (Group IB).
Following the discovery, Yok Don National Park has intensified patrols and strengthened monitoring activities in areas frequently used by the herd.
Forest rangers are also conducting inspections and removing illegal traps set by poachers targeting wildlife inside the park.
Spanning approximately 115,000 hectares, Yok Don National Park is considered one of Vietnam’s most important biodiversity conservation areas.
The park provides habitat for numerous large mammals, including Asian elephant, gaur, deer, and other rare wildlife species that require strict protection and long-term conservation efforts.
