Rare green turtle Chelonia mydas released back to the sea
VOV.VN - A 12 kg green turtle listed as an endangered species in the Red Book of Vietnam was released into its natural habitat at the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area in Lam Dong province on August 12.

According to the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area management board, a local fisherman found the turtle and voluntarily handed it over to local authorities.
Before returning to the sea, the turtle underwent a health check and was tagged with the identification code VN1611. It measures 50 cm in length, 47 cm in width, and is in good health.
The green sea turtle is one of the rare marine turtle species listed on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Vietnam Red Book. It is classified as endangered and is a priority species for protection, often illegally hunted for its meat and shell.
The rescue and release of rare and endangered marine species back into the wild is a commendable effort by local authorities and residents in the coastal areas of Lam Dong province.
Earlier, on August 9, 93 baby turtles were also released into the sea after successfully hatching from a rescued nest in the area.
At present, staff and volunteers of the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area continue to regularly patrol and protect nesting beaches to promptly rescue marine turtle nests, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity in the sea.
