Radio Australia on October 30 praised Vietnam’s efforts in combating bird flu, saying Vietnam is setting a bright example in this field.
The radio said that in December 2003, Vietnam, which then had a total population of more than 83 million and over 210 million poultry, was one of the first countries in the world reporting on human deaths caused by bird flu. Since the 42nd human victim of bird flu was announced in Vietnam one year ago, many people have become increasingly worried about the spread of H5N1 virus, which may cause serious consequences in the country.
However, Vietnam actively implemented many effective measures to fight the deadly disease. Hence, there has been no new outbreaks of bird flu up to now.
Radio Australia also quoted Hans Troedsson, a representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO), as saying Vietnam has been successful in curbing the bird flu epidemic even though there is a danger that the disease will likely recur in the country.
