Project to build 1,000 libraries for students marks Vietnam Reading Culture Day

VOV.VN - A project to build 1,000 “knowledge libraries” for students was announced in Hanoi on April 21, together with the launch of the “Donate a Book- Open the Future” campaign on the occasion of Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day.

The initiative was launched by the Vietnam Publishing Association in coordination with Young Pioneer and Children Newspaper.

At the event, Chairman of the Vietnam Publishing Association Pham Minh Tuan said that in Vietnam’s development strategy, people and knowledge are identified as central factors and key drivers of rapid and sustainable development.

He said that major Party resolutions, including those on science and technology, education and training, and cultural development, as well as Directive No. 04 on publishing activities, place emphasis on developing human resources, promoting reading culture and creating conditions for younger generations to access knowledge.

In this context, the “1,000 knowledge libraries for students” project is introduced as a concrete measure to improve students’ access to knowledge, particularly in disadvantaged areas where access to books, newspapers and reading spaces remains limited.

Under the plan, the project will be implemented nationwide from 2026 to 2035, with the goal of building and providing 1,000 libraries at schools. Each library is designed based on a standard model, including 500 to 1,000 titles of books, newspapers and publications suitable for students, along with learning support equipment such as computers, presentation devices and reading-friendly spaces.

The project is designed to to build a sustainable learning environment where reading becomes a habit, a need and a source of enjoyment for students. It is also expected to contribute to developing students’ capacities and qualities in the coming period.

Alongside the project announcement, the organising committee launched the “Donate a Book – Open the Future” campaign nationwide, calling on students, schools, organisations and individuals to contribute books, newspapers, stories and publications suitable for students to supplement the project’s libraries.

The campaign supplements knowledge resources and contributes to promoting a spirit of sharing and responsibility towards the community among young people. Each donated book serves as a learning resource, helps connect readers, encourages a love of reading, nurtures aspirations and creates more learning opportunities for students in disadvantaged areas.

The organising committee encourages each student to contribute at least one suitable book. Schools, classes and youth groups can organise book donation drives within their units. Donated publications must ensure appropriate content, be suitable for the age group, remain intact and meet educational criteria.

All contributed books, newspapers and publications will be received, sorted, reviewed and added to the project’s library system in line with set criteria, ensuring transparency and effective use.

With nationwide scale, broad community participation and a socialised implementation mechanism, the “1,000 knowledge libraries for students” project and the “Donate a Book- Open the Future” campaign are expected to bring practical, long-term benefits to education and society and help build a strong knowledge foundation for Vietnam’s younger generation.
