The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Head of the National Steering Committee for Bird Flu Control on August 15 sent an urgent telegram to local People’s Committees in provinces and cities warning of the high risk of a bird flu epidemic recurrence.

The Minister called on local People’s Committees to launch synchronous prevention measures by intensifying propaganda activities to provide people with timely and accurate information about epidemic developments and guide them with safe animal raising methods.

In addition, provinces and districts were required to set up hot lines and vaccinate new supplementary poultry flocks while strictly managing the use of these vaccines to minimise loss and waste.

It is also necessary to boost prevention measures in animal breeding farms, poultry trading markets, slaughterhouses, and former affected areas. Checking and monitoring the transport, slaughter, and trading of poultry and poultry products should be intensified and quarantine checking points at key roads should be established.

The telegram also asked border provinces to accelerate measures to prevent poultry and animal smuggling. Cities and industrial parks were asked not to raise, transport, trade, and slaughter poultry in a careless manner. Department stores should have all poultry products quarantined by authorised agencies.
