The first congress of representatives of ethnic minority groups was held in Dong Hoi City in the central province of Quang Binh on December 29, attracting 200 local delegates.

The province has 2 ethnic minority groups-the Bru-Van Kieu and the Chut-with nearly 20,000 people, making up 2.3 percent of Quang Binh’s total population.

These ethnic minority groups live in 17 mountainous communes in the districts of Tuyen Hoa, Minh Hoa, Bo Trach, Quang Ninh and Le Thuy.

Over the past 10 years, poor communes in Quang Binh have received over VND300 billion to build hundreds of infrastructure projects. Under the Government’s Programme 134, nearly VND60 billion was spent on building 2,700 houses and reclaiming 500 hectares of land for production and 66 hectares for housing and other construction projects.

The poverty rate has fallen by 4-5 percent per year on average. Quang Binh now has 472 ethnic minority households, each with average income of over VND30 million per year. All communes have road links to the centre and healthcare stations and 97 percent of all communes are connected to the national grid.

Notably, in 2009, the number of ethnic minority students in the province has increased by 12.3 times compared to 15 years ago.

In the coming time, local authorities will accelerate poverty reduction and hunger elimination among ethnic minority groups and continue to build infrastructure and provide land and forest for them, said Luong Ngoc Binh, Secretary of the Quang Binh provincial Party Committee.
