Polish architect remembered for role in preservation work

Polish archaeologist and architect Kazimierz Kwiatkowski was commemorated in Thua Thien-Hue province on March 19 with a ceremony on the anniversary of his 20th death anniversary.

The architect breathed his last in Hue city on March 19, 1997 when he was working for a Polish-funded preservation project in the ancient citadel.

Addressing the event, which was jointly held by the provincial authorities and the Polish Embassy in Vietnam, Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre, recalled how the architect, who was known affectionately as Kazik, had worked with dedication, in-depth knowledge and professionalism in restoring Vietnamese cultural heritage throughout 17 years.

The Polish-funded restoration of the The To Mieu – the ancestral temple to Vietnamese emperors within the Hue ancient citadel – was Kazik’s last project in Vietnam.

Hai said Kazik had significantly contributed to fostering cultural cooperation between Poland and Vietnam in general and between Polish experts and Thua Thien – Hue in particular.

Kazik was known for his contributions to restoring the Hoi An ancient town, My Son Sanctuary and Complex of Hue Monuments.

On March 17, a ceremony was also held in the Hoi An, another world cultural heritage site in the central province of Quang Nam, to mark Kazik’s 20th death anniversary.

Since the restoration of the The To Mieu in 1997, numerous Vietnam – Poland joint preservation programmes have been carried out, particularly inside the Complex of Hue Monuments.
