Police uncover 21,000 criminal cases in first half

The police uncovered 21,000 criminal cases and arrested more than 42,700 in the first half of this year, 2.37 percent higher than the same period last year, the Ministry of Public Security announced at a press conference in Hanoi on June 27.

Of them, 1,061 were gang related and 4,820 were gambling cases with more than 21,000 people busted.

More than 9,400 economic cases were brought to light, with several ones taking advantage of multi-level marketing to appropriate assets worth trillions of VND. Notably, eight employees from Lien Ket Viet company cheated and seized more than VND1.9 trillion (US$86.3 million) from 52,000 people in many localities.

As the European Football Championship is underway, the police have raided 242 cases of gambling on the Internet.

Another 8,881 cases of violations in environment and natural resources were also dealt with.

A massive fish death in the central coastal region was investigated under the direction of the government.

Lieutenant General Le Van De, deputy head of the General Department of Politics under the Vietnam People’s Police, said the department plans to pilot two theft hunting groups under the watch of the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Police Departments’ Criminal Police Offices.

The plan, initiated by Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Dinh La Thang, has been submitted to the ministry for consideration, he said.
