Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked ministries, provincial People's Committees and relevant agencies to take drastic measures to cope with Typhoon Cimaron which is expected to hit the central coastal provinces from Quang Binh to Khanh Hoa in 48 hours.

In a dispatch on October 30, the PM assigned Deputy PM Truong Vinh Trong and the National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control to directly instruct flood and storm control activities.

PM Dung asked localities from Quang Binh to Kien Giang provinces to keep a close watch on the typhoon, ban offshore fishing and call in vessels still at sea to return to storm shelters. Localities were also asked to evacuate people from high-risk areas to safer places and prepare for rescue operations and relief supplies of food and medicines to mitigate material and physical losses.

Relevant ministries were required to coordinate with the National Hydro-meteorology Forecasting Centre and the National Committee for Search and Rescue Operations to cope with emergency situations caused by the typhoon.

In an urgent message on October 30, the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control asked relevant ministries and coastal provinces to closely monitor the number of vessels and people operating at sea and prepare for eventualities.

According to an initial report, more than 11,200 vessels with about 96,500 fishermen on aboard have been asked to return or move to safer areas to avoid the typhoon. However, relevant sectors have not yet had contact with 670 vessels operating in the southern areas of the East Sea.
